Numeracy

Numeracy learning in schools is now based on the Numeracy Framework.  Below is information from the New Zealand Maths website ( http://nzmaths.co.nz/ ) that explains this framework.  As parents it is important that you understand the framework.  It is no doubt quite different to how maths was learnt when parents went through school.   You can also use the activities that support your child's learning from the NZ Maths website (http://www.nzmaths.co.nz/maths-our-house ).

What is the Number Framework?
The Number Framework is intended to help teachers, parents and students understand the stages of learning of number knowledge and understanding.
There are two sections to the Number Framework. The Strategy section describes the processes students use to solve problems involving numbers - how they work things out. The Knowledge section describes the key items about number that children know and can recall quickly.
The two sections are linked, with children requiring knowledge to improve their strategies, and using strategies to develop new knowledge.

Mathematics Games is a great website if you would like your child to work on basic factss. This includes addition and subtraction, multiplication and division.

These are the key numeracy skills that your child should be able to do at each level.

Multiplication Stage 4
At this stage your child is learning skip-counting sequences to solve simple multiplication problems. At home you can help your child to practice skip-counting forwards and backwards in twos and fives. Try doing this with them by clapping a beat together or by following a number strip. Change the starting numbers for the sequences. most children find the backwards sequence the most challenging!

Start from 2: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, …

Count down from 14: 14, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2.

Start from 5: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, …

At home you and your child could make up two more multiplication problems for us to solve in maths.
